| Virgin Blue E-Jet Takes Off |
|
Virgin Blue has today made Australian aviation history with the inaugural service of its new Embraer E-Jets. The first passenger service departed Brisbane at 6.45am and arrived in Cairns at 9.05am, and in typical Virgin Blue style travellers on the flight received a t-shirt and complimentary champagne as well as participating in an inflight samba competition and other activities to celebrate the aircraft’s Brazilian heritage.
Virgin Blue CEO Brett Godfrey said the move was particularly significant given that it’s the first time the carrier had operated a second aircraft type. “We conducted extensive research into this aircraft and are confident it is the ideal jet to suit Australia, particularly on regional air routes,” he said. The debut of the regional jet follows Qantaslink’s announcement of a major fleet expansion using Bombardier Q400 turbo-props, including 12 firm orders plus 24 options and purchase rights. |
